The Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul, hosted the American Legion's 1959 National Convention. The 1959 program commemorates the first National Convention, held in Minneapolis. During the first convention, The American Legion established ideals and traditions that continue throughout subsequent conventions.
The 1962 badge highlights the mushroom clouds seen in Las Vegas from the Nevada Test Site, now known as the Nevada National Security Site.
The Nevada Test Site, established in 1951 and located approximately 65 miles north of Las Vegas, served as one of the most significant nuclear weapons testing sites in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s.
The badge reflects the issues before the delegates at the 1962 National Convention during the peak of the Atomic Age and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
