Gavel and block used at the First National Convention in 1919.
The gavel is plain with no writing or special carving.
The block reads "Thomas Goldingay of Newark, N.J., being duly sworn, declares upon oath, that this block and this gavel accompanying it, was used by Commanders Lindsley and Franklin D'Olier, at the First National Convention of the American Legion, held at Minneapolis, Minn. in November 1919 and that he salvaged them both from the wreckage of the platform of the Convention Hall. Signed Thomas Goldingay. Sworn and subscribed to before me, this 19th day of February, 1926 J.Admerman (signed) Master in Chancery of New Jersey. Witnessed by Franklin D'Olier (signed).
Gavel used by National Commander William Galbraith to open the 50th National Convention in 1968 and by National Commander Denise Rohan to open the 100th National Convention in 2018.
